Each year the SCCA Board of Directors selects two businesses from the Seward Neighborhood to honor with the SCCA Business Honor Roll Award. The 2014 awards were announced at the Annual Celebration in December and went to Beez Kneez and Wood From the Hood.
Beez Kneez accomplishments include:
- Being at the forefront in providing locally sourced honey
- Producing over 3,000 pounds of honey powered by bicycle in one of the coolest examples of innovation
- Offering a bicycle delivery service bringing honey to anyone’s doorstep
- Leading a coalition at the State Capital this year with the theme “Healthy Bees, Healthy Lives” which formulated critical policies regarding the use and labeling of pesticides associated with the death of bees
- Providing educational opportunities for hundreds of residents throughout the Twin Cities on the role of bees and their critical importance to the food we enjoy.
Wood From the Hood was honored due to its work in reclaiming wood from neighborhoods and having it live on as high quality lumber and custom made products that have benefited hundreds of people who use their products in their homes and businesses. Their handcrafted pieces include cribbage and cutting boards, growth charts and holiday tree ornaments, and each piece includes the zip code where the wood was reclaimed from.
Wood From the Hood was named one of the coolest small businesses in the Twin Cities for 2014 by Business Insight. We, of course, have known this for many years.
Recent examples of Wood From the Hood’s craftsmanship include local installations at:
- Seward Co-op Grocery
- Pizza Lucé
- Surley Craft Beer Hall (newly opened in Prospect Park)
Congratulations to the 2014 SCCA Business Honor Roll recipients!
