July Business Buzz

Lots going on this month! In case you missed all the hubbub, the Seward Co-op has announced its plans to open a second location in South Minneapolis, at 38th and 3rd Avenue, an area known as a “food desert” due to the distance residents have to travel to get fresh produce. They hope to create over 200 jobs in the new store. Find out more about their plans here.

New French Bakery, whose owner we praised last month for winning Businessperson of the Year, has sold the company to a private equity firm. He’ll be staying on help run the company for at least a year as part of the deal. My Broadsheet has the scoop.

The House of Kolor building at 2521 27th Ave South, across the street from Skol, has been purchased by a young couple, Carrie and Tory Christensen, who run a business called Wetland Habitat Restoration, a sustainability focused landscape business. They are currently working on restoring the three storefronts at the property, which feature hardwood floors and the original tin ceilings. They’ll be using one for their office, as well as the big warehouse behind the building, and will looking for tenants in September for the other two spaces. We’ll feature more information about their business in a future newsletter. Email info@sewardbusiness.org for more info.

Rumor has it that Northern Cap building, 2633 Minnehaha, is now for sale, not just for lease. This space has housed the famous seasonal $3 hat sale where a tenant sells off excess merchandise at steep discounts in their warehouse space. Multiple SCCA board members expressed dismay at the loss of that special event, but we do hope to see a good new owner make use of the building in the future.
