Lighting Improvements at Welna II Hardware & Paint

Stop in Welna II Hardware & Paint (2201 E Franklin) and check out their new LED lighting! They recently re-lamped their store lighting, replacing 32 watt florescent bulbs with 12 watt LED bulbs, and the improvement is noticeable. Welna offers special pricing on LED bulbs, and Jim Welna is happy to share information on Xcel Energy rebates that are available to businesses for changing to more efficient lights. Franklin Avenue Bridge Update

As construction continues, West River Parkway is now closed south of Franklin Bridge. Hennepin County will be applying new concrete and restoring the bridge. The parkway is expected to reopen by the winter months. In addition, work on the failed slope began on Monday, July 6th. The area between 4th Street South and the Franklin Avenue bridge will remain closed until construction is complete (November). Please follow the detours posted on the map below.

K’ul Chocolate

The former owner of New French Bakery, Peter Kelsey, is set to open the doors of his newest business, K’ul Chocolate, on August 1st. The store roasts, winnows, and grinds the cacao themselves to ensure freshness and quality. K’ul Chocolate’s mission is to show the world that pure, dark chocolate is food, not candy. Located at 2211 E Franklin Ave, the store will make and sell chocolate and energy bars. They will also have an online store on the web at K’ul Chocolate

Food Safety Classes in Somali

Somali food safety

In response to requests from Somali business owners, the Minneapolis Health Department is sponsoring food safety training classes in Somali. Three sessions of food safety training classes taught in Somali will be offered in July and August at the Midtown Global Market basement meeting room, 920 East Lake Street, in Minneapolis.

The sessions run from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm for three days. A Certified Food Manager exam will be given on the third day.

  • Session 1: July 20, 21, and 22
  • Session 2: August 3, 4, and 5
  • Session 3: August 17, 18, and 19

Cost is $50 for food workers and operators working in businesses licensed by the City of Minneapolis, and $150 for non-Minneapolis business operators. More trainings will be offered in the fall.
