Graybar Electric – A Worker Owned Company

Have you ever wondered what happens at the large industrial building  that spans two blocks on the north side of 25th Street in Seward’s industrial park? Kara Bowlin gives SCCA some answers in our most recent interview.

How would you describe what Graybar does?
Graybar is a leader in the distribution of high quality electrical, communications and data networking products, and we specialize in related supply chain management and logistics services. Through our network of more than 240 North American distribution facilities, we stock and sell products from thousands of manufacturers. Graybar is also a Fortune 500 corporation and one of the largest employee-owned companies in North America.

We saw that Workplace Dynamics recently named Graybar to its list of America’s top workplaces. What do you or your coworkers think is so great about your employer?
Graybar strives to create an environment where employees can grow and prosper while using their skills to contribute to the company’s success. Graybar has a long tradition of providing employees with opportunities to learn and advance their own careers and other benefits.

What does it mean for Graybar to be employee-owned? How does this improve the work experience?
Graybar has been an employee-owned company since 1929. While not all of our employees are shareholders, our culture of employee ownership creates a sense of pride throughout the company and drives us to work to our customers’ advantage every day.

We are very thankful to have Graybar’s support for SCCA. What other sorts of community organizations does Graybar support? What are Graybar’s biggest philanthropic initiatives?
Graybar does its best to be a responsible corporate citizen, and we work to make a difference in the communities where we do business across North America. Our employees actively give their time and energy to numerous charitable organizations. Two years ago, we started Graybar CARES, which stands for Community, Awareness, Responsibility, Education and Service. Graybar CARES serves as our platform for community involvement across the company and has fast become a powerful channel that unites us to help those in need.
